Abel's father had been framed for the murders of six politicians. He was taken into custody, sent to prison, and underwent a trial. The senior Walker was given the death sentence and was to spend his final days in a jail cell. Abel cried for many days after the sentence was given and his mother turned to alcohol. After a number of weeks, Abel final felt able live again. However, there was still one thing that bothered him immensely: the garden.
His father loved that garden and the soil was too tough for him to dig up at this point in time. Abel lamented over the eventual state of the plot. Abel would have turned to his mother but she was lost to spirits and Abel had no idea what else to do. His father loved that garden and Abel wanted it to live. The boy sent a letter to his father and described the predicament:
Dear Father,
I am feeling pretty sad, because it looks like your garden will die. The soil is tough from last year's intense rain and I am not strong enough to dig into it. I wanted to keep the garden from dying because I know how much you love it. If you were here you'd tend to it, just like you used to do. I miss you.
Love,
Abel.
A few days later he received a letter from his father:
Dear Abel, my son,
Don't dig up the garden.
That's where the bodies are buried.
Love,
Dad.
At 3 AM the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to Abel and his mother for the disturbance and left.
A day later Abel received another letter from his father:
Dear Abel, my son,
Go ahead and tend to the garden now. Just like I taught you.
That's the best I could do under the circumstances.
I love you,
Dad.
Abel's father was executed six months later.
